What is Methodism? |
The United Methodist Church is an open and inclusive protestant denomination which welcomes all people to our church for worship, fellowship, and service. Our denominational heritage can be traced to an Anglican priest, John Wesley, who in the late 1700's attempted to make the witness of the Church a more vital force in people's lives and in society. He emphasized the need for people to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. What calls us to Christ and nurtures us is the unlimited and unconditional love that God gives to us through Christ. We call this God's grace.
Once we have experienced that love, we are called to share it with the world. This is found in our denominational emphasis on inviting others to have faith in Christ. It is also the reason United Methodism is concerned with social issues. Our denomination takes stances on many social issues and calls for all Christians to take seriously how their faith influences all of life.
All United Methodist congregations are connected to each other in many ways. We share ministries, support missions all around the world and deploy clergy to serve in a variety of churches. We are glad to share ministry with other Christian communities and to work for justice with all persons.
